My daughter had a school friend over to our house on Friday for the first time. Now, we have known this child for a little while before they became classmates from various activities around town. Once classmates they became fast friends. We visited their house once and this past friday was our turn. So she rode the bus home with my daughter. All was good for the first hour. Then, we sat down for dinner. They started acting like animals. Throwing coasters, spinning the placemats, climbing on the table, etc. We had to throw down the hammer to get it to stop. I hate being mean when friends are over.
I don't blame her for that behavior. Kids will act up when friends are visiting. No biggie.
It was during dinner that rubbed me the wrong way. She giggled non-stop about nothing. And it was not only annoying, but distracting to my two kids that they wouldn't eat. We asked her to please stop. She gave me some smart-ass response that made my hubby and I just look at each other. Then, my two kids started to giggle along with her. I asked them all to please stop and just eat. She blurted out to me that it was not her fault. I told her I wasn't blaming her. I just wanted them all to stop. It was cute but they needed to eat. She then proceeded to slurp and gulp down her spagetti in the most disgusting manner. Hubby and I again exchanged looks???? In the middle of eating she let out a huge belch and then laughed about it. I can't tell you how many times hubby and I exchanged glances. Her disrespect for us was amazing. She would say things to us that we couldn't believe. Or to my kids. I had to tell her more than once that we don't talk that way in our house. She actually said, "I don't care." It took everything in me not to kick her out on the spot.
The amazing thing was I have been around this child multiple times and have never seen such behavior from her. I guess when her mom is not around she is very different! Or so I thought until her parents showed up to pick her up. I invited them in for a bit to chat. We were talking when a fight broke out between my daughter and said friend. My daughter was crying because her friend told her she did not want to be friends anymore. It hurt my daughter's feelings and she didn't understand why. The parents of the child tried to get her to apologize. No luck. She was just as disrespectful to them. She said she didn't care. That made my daughter cry even more. Hubby had to take her back to her bedroom to talk to her and get her calmed down.
After settling everyone, they decided to leave and the little girl just marched right out. Her mother told her to say "Goodbye" and "Thank You". She yelled "BYE!" on her way out. The mother thanked us for feeding her dinner and said she was sure her daughter thought it was delicious.
After she left, my husband and I could barely contain ourselves from bitching in front of our children. After my daughter went to bed, my hubby said that was one rude child and he hoped she never visited our house again.
The following day I noticed my daughter talking to me like her little friend did. Boy, did I squash that behavior quickly. I even went as far as to tell her that her friend may talk like that to adults, but she will not!

CitiMortgage giving bad advice
It is no secret if you know me that my hubby lost his job 2 years ago (as sole breadwinner) and we are now starting our own business and going in debt every day because of it. We are well aware that we are upside down and hope that one day our hardwork will pay off and we will flip right side up and skyrocket!
In the meantime, I am doing everything I can to reduce monthly expenses. I now clip coupons, bartar, trade, recycle as much as possible and search for every deal I can when in need of something. We don't buy anything we don't need. We do without if we can. All my kids clothes are hand-me-downs. We only buy meat on the BOGO deals at local supermarket. We have become the epitome of frugal.
The only leisure bill we have right now is cable which I got reduced to $40 with more channels than before. We don't have a DVD because son broke it. I however scored a VCR at a garage sale for $1 and all my friends have given me all their old VHS tapes for free!
See, I am being disciplined!
Anyway, hubby hears CitiMortgage is helping people in need with reducing their mortgage interest or suspending for a few years so monthly payments are reduced. In some cases extending 30 years to 40 years to help people out. So I call because hubby says we meet 5 of the 8 criteria to get help.
Here is where it gets fun.
The lady asks me all these questions about our expenses. She then proceed to act shocked at how we are so upside down and how much our credit card bills minimums are a month. NO SHIT SHERLOCK! That is why I am calling. She told me we didn't qualify for help and get this reason why: a.) we were TOO upside down and b.) we weren't delinquent yet on our payments!
Does that make any sense to you?
She then lectures me and literally says, "I hate to be the one to break it to you" and tells me how we only need 4 things - Shelter, 1 mode of transportation, food, electric. She lectures me on credit card spending and how we need to make more money. I sit there and just listen patiently. After she is done. I explain the situation of hubby losing job, him starting business, me going back into workforce as freelancer and working too, and how we have to use credit cards to keep his business going or we forfiet the income he already makes. I explain that last year I made $2400 a month freelancing but that money has been drastically reduced because the work is just not there. I explain that even though we are upside down by a lot I have managed to pay every single bill every month. I am just looking for a little relief to make it easier.
She then proceeded to explain to me that we are in quite a predicament and her only solution was this:
STOP PAYING YOUR CREDIT CARD BILLS!
Excuse me? Yes, she did indeed advise me to just stop paying those bills altogether. Let them go for about 6 months, rack up late payments and higher interest rates and then call them in 6 months and negotiate a 30% payoff. That is what she did when she went through her divorce. She racked up the cc bills and then just didn't pay them. She told me some people aren't saavy enough to do it. And with the economy the way it is right now the cc companies will surely take whatever you will give them. I expressed my concern with what that would do to my credit report. She told me not to worry about that because at this point I had no choice but to do it and my credit report won't get hit as bad with an unsecured loan compared to if I didn't pay my mortgage. I couldn't believe I was hearing this. Not because it wasn't true or wouldn't work, but because a CitiMortgage counselor was giving me this advice! Do they know this woman works for them? Do they really want her out there telling people to do this? Amazing.

Hope you enjoy!

Craigslist
OMG...Craigslist drives me bonkers!!! Or should I say, the people on Craigslist drive me bonkers!
I have a toy listed on there right now for $20. This toy is literally like new, the only difference is that you don't have to fight to get it out of some ridiculous packaging. Someone emailed me saying, "I would be interested in purchasing it for no more than $15" and she wanted me to drive about 45 minutes to meet her near her home. So let's see, it's listed for more than she wants to spend and it's not close to her...why waste my time then? By the way...her options are mine for $20, one other listing for $30 or a new one for about $50 (with tax). Um, yeah...good luck with that lady!
I also have a stroller listed for $250 that was well over $500 new. The thing is spotless! Someone offered me $150 for it. Come on...really?!
A while back I had a small toy listed for $8 and some lady offered me $6. What?! I am absolutely sure $2 was not going to break the bank for her so why insult me? I said "no thank you" and she bought it anyway.
On a more pleasant note, there was another lady that wanted two things I had listed for $30 each. She asked how much for both so I told her $60 and she said she would take them. Now, I felt it reasonable for her to ask to see if I would give a discount for buying them both and I respected her for buying them anyway. So when we met, I sold them to her for $50 instead. All it takes is a little decency. :-)
Ok, so I look at it this way. I pay full price for a new item. When I'm done with it and it's in excellent/like new condition, I feel it's reasonable to ask half price for it. Whoever buys it is going to use it and resell it, right? Take the aforementioned toy for example. A $50 toy in perfect condition should be worth $25. Someone could buy it and when they're finished with it, they could pretty much still get $15 for it. If I sell it to them for $15 and they turn around and resell it for $15, it didn't cost them a thing. Um...NO! I mean, I think that's great for people that works out for but I'm not willing to give my stuff away. If I'm going to give it away, it's going to a friend who could use it or a charity where someone really needs it instead of someone just wanting to get something for nothing.
I will admit that it would be nice to be able to tell if cheap people really do need things to be cheap though. If $5 matters, then I totally get that. But I'm always left feeling like someone is trying to get the best of me. I would be the first person in line to donate all of our unused toys to someone who really needed them for their child. But how do you know? How do you know this isn't someone trying to get a good deal just to turn around and sell it for a profit? How can you be helpful to someone without knowing their situation, or knowing for sure they're being honest? Do you just do it and feel good for doing it and leave it at that? Even though you might be getting scammed?
Oh well, it's just the beef I have for the day. I swear, there are positive thoughts in my head too! :-)

Wow!
Ok...I just had to mention this because it was so outrageous to me. The other day, I go to my friend's house and she has her 27 Dresses DVD playing. She said her daughter loves that movie. No big deal, right? Her daughter is 4!!! So, apparently she feels it's appropriate for her 4 year old daughter and 7 year old son to watch it. I know, it's judgemental but that's a big "Wow!" in my book.
Love that movie though! :-)

Tastefully Simple
For anyone who has not tried Tastefully Simple...you're missing
out! It's one of those things where someone hosts a party and you
order it from them. I know...the never ending parties! But anyway,
it's mixes for a bunch of different foods and sauces and some
seasonings. I don't sell it so I can't explain it as well as someone
who does. But I do know that it's so very easy! I make the Wild
Rice soup and my family loves it. All you do is add water to the mix
and let it simmer for 45 minutes. Easy, right? I also add shredded
chicken to mine which we really like. I just buy a fresh, cooked
rotisserie chicken from the grocery store and shred it. It's so
easy! They have a creamy potato soup mix too that's just as easy
but I add bacon and shredded cheese to it...yum! They have a
fantastic mix for beer bread, a key lime cheese ball mix that I
serve with graham cracker sticks and a mix for the best veggie dip
I've ever had. And their motto is pretty much that you only have
to add one (maybe two) ingredients to their mixes. Love it, love it,
love it!
Sassy :-)

People who don't have kids...ugh!
When you're a mom, it's sometimes so hard to hang around women
who do not have kids. And by the way...to some degree, I was
probably one of those women at one time or another long before I
had kids.
I had a neighbor over for dinner last night because my hubby is
out of town and hers was working. She's very sweet but I had
never noticed how foul her mouth was. I mean, quite honestly, it's
not that bad. But come on...a little common sense goes a long way!
If small children are standing right next to you, clean up your
mouth a little bit. Is that too much to ask? A few times is fine with
me but in this case, I was sure my sweet little girl was going to
wake up talking like a trucker (warning: mild exaggeration).
It's my own fault I guess. This same neighbor was meeting me, with
my small children of course, at the pool one afternoon last year.
We were planning on meeting at 4:00. She was getting off work
and going home to let her dog out and put her bathing suit on. Her
husband was working then too. So after stopping at home for a few
minutes, she shows up at the pool with a drink in hand. I mean
honestly, if you're meeting someone with small children at the pool
at 4:00 in the afternoon, why do you need to drink? I wasn't
offended by it, just a little startled. But then again, she tells me
last night that she was excited because she had three drinks
yesterday afternoon. It was a specific drink that she had and was
excited about but I had never heard of it so I can't remember
what it was. Keep in mind that she now works from home so she was
home, alone, drinking in the afternoon. And I said that to her. You
had three drinks at home alone in the middle of the day?
LOL...sorry, couldn't hold my tongue. So she proceeds to tell me
that she doesn't drink often...YEAH, RIGHT!!!
Tip: You're an adult...get a filter! (Got that one from an episode of
Brothers and Sisters...good one isn't it? And yes, I know I could use one too!)

I hate Unions
I want to puke when I hear that the automakers are asking for some bailout from our government. Why you ask? Well, thank you for asking cuz this babe is about to educate you all about the wonderful world of Unions!
I grew up in a Union family. My father, brother and about all my relatives work or retired from some sort of Union. Most of them automakers.
Let's start with my Dad. He retired from a major automaker. He tells us stories of how guys would come into the factory drunk and high. They would not only put their own lives in danger but also the lives of others. Those guys often worked in pairs. The Union would protect them from getting fired. One time, a guy brought his drunk friend into work with him! He didn't even work there! They just hung out. I mean come on already!
The guys also literally slept on the job. My dad told us how they would make what they called their cribs. They would make these beds up in the machinery or boiler areas. They would hide from their bosses up there and sleep. My dad worked 2nd shift and many of his buddies would work side jobs during the day before coming to work. They would catch up on their sleep at work.
The Union also had the company provide each employee with a certain number of free glasses and boots each year. Regardless if the person needed them. My dad would get prescription sunglasses just to use up his requirement. He had more damn pairs of glasses. About every 6 months he was getting new ones!
The Union also negotiated great health insurance for the employees. That was great growing up. Little did I know how great it was until I got into the real world myself. Until a few years ago, my parents were not paying co-pays for visits and only $1 for prescriptions. They actually complained when a $20 co-pay was added and prescriptions went up to $5. If they only knew what the rest of America was paying!
And here is the big one that really makes me sick. Right now, there is a whole load of people laid off indefinitely from my dad's old factory. The union negotiated that they get paid 85% of their salary. They can also go work anywhere they want in the meantime and earn as much as they want. How nice is that? A cousin of mine has been on the 85% layoff for over a year now! She just sits at home and does nothing. Imagine. Her annual salary is probably around $60,000. She gets 85 % of that. And just the other day, my dad called and was telling me a buddy of his is on the 85% layoff and the union called him up and offered him a job working for them at $45 an hour during his layoff!
Now you know why our cars cost so much! Now you know why jobs are shipped out of the country! Unions price themselves out of here. Don't blame Bush! Blame the damn unions which are supported by the Democrats and the new president-elect Obama.
Unions had their day. At the turn of the century there was indeed a need for them. Now, I think we can eliminate them. Unions spoil people and make them lazy, disrespectful, unmotivated and entitled. Hmmm. Sounds very similar to another govt program that I also hate. Welfare.

I don't know how to let you go
I am sitting here listening to Pandora Radio and a song by Sarah McLachlan comes on "Do What You Have to Do". It suddenly dawns on me that it was a song I used to repeatedly listen to when I lost an old boyfriend. He was my brother's best friend but no one knew we were dating - no one is his family or mine. Sorta a secret summer romance that turned long distance when I was off breaks and back on campus. Weird I know.
I had been in love with him since I was in 7th grade and he was like 6 years older than me. When I hit college he took notice much to my delight. By then he was a Navy Seal and so HOT! What a bod on that boy! Phewy.
Someday I will write about that steamy romance!

Politics & A Little Bit of Common Sense
So, I'm Sassy...what better topic to start with than
politics? Haha!
I am definitely not the most knowledgeable person about our
candidates. Or now that it's decided, would they be considered
former candidates? Don't know! Anyway...I would call myself a
Republican but I'm not opposed to voting for a Democrat if their
priorities and proposed solutions were similar to my beliefs. I
would probably be the first in line to vote for someone who could
actually run a clean campaign. How about someone who spends
money on their ads telling me why they're the best person for the
job instead of wasting all their time and efforts telling me why the
other person is an awful choice for the job?
I would vote for an African American president or a female
president, as long as they stand for what I believe in. I'm amazed
that this election became so racial. Obama is HALF black and was
accused of "acting too white" by many African Americans. What
does that mean? By carrying yourself and speaking in a
respectable fashion you're "too white"? I'm sorry but I don't see
that as a bad thing. No, he didn't behave like he walked out of the
projects because if he did, he never would have been a presidential
candidate in the first place. I know it's harsh but I would view
Jesse Jackson being elected President of the United States a
little more "historical" than Barack Obama.
I find myself, at every election, voting for the candidate that I
dislike the least. Never has there been someone that I completely
liked and believed in. But you know what? Until they create a
machine or a robot to run this country, no President will ever be
perfect. First and foremost, they are human beings. Very brave
human beings at that. Being the President of the United States has
to be the hardest and worst job in the world. People completely
scrutinize everything about you and attack your family on a daily
basis. Try running a country while having to fear for your life
everyday with maniacs out there actually wanting to kill you and
see how perfectly you would do the job.
And that brings me to President Bush. Why do people want to
blame him for EVERYTHING? Let's start with the economy and
the heart-wrenching fact that people are losing their homes.
Excuse me...democrats listen up...CLINTON was the one who
mandated subprime mortgages. You remember him, the one who
spent a large portion of his time in office making a complete
mockery of our judicial system with Ms. Lewinsky. And yet people
adore him. Baffling I tell you...just baffling. HE was the one that
caused this mess that people are so quick to pin on Bush. Are your
memories really that short or just that selective? September 11th,
remember that? Bush had to clean up that mess too. That tragic,
historic day was planned while Clinton was in office. If you asked
Americans on September 12th, 2001 what they expect from our
President, they would have answered to keep our country safe. He
has done that. That's huge! Everyone thought more attacks were
coming...and they were. Think about all the planned attacks that
were thwarted that we heard about and now imagine all the ones
that were never reported. If you deny how huge the fact is that we
haven't been attacked since then, then you must not remember the
gut-wrenching fear of that day. You must not remember the
safeness you felt being ripped out from under you. You must not
remember seeing the twin towers going down like it was just some
movie. That's something that should never be forgotten. So you see,
our current President has been a little busy with major attacks on
our country, the most devastating natural disaster our country has
ever seen and a war. Our current President didn't have the time or
the defective personality trait to get it on with an intern like the
beloved Clinton did.
The Iraq war. Newsflash...President Bush did not sit in a room by
himself and decide to attack Iraq. Our country does not work that
way. There were plenty of educated people involved in that
decision. But I just love how people sit over here in the safety of
their own country, in the comfort of their own home, with restful
nights of sleep in their own bed, seeing their family on a daily
basis and having plenty of good food to eat at each meal feel they
are qualified to judge the Iraq war. What gives them that right?
The fact that they listen to what the media chooses to tell them?
Here's a clue...unless you have fought in this war or are an Iraqi
living in Iraq, you have no clue! The majority of our military
believes in their Commander in Chief and believes in this war. I'm
not saying that everyone in the military feels that way and I'm not
saying that they all believe in every aspect of the war. But the
fact that Americans sit here and criticize this war while our
military, the people who have actually lived in Iraq, fought in Iraq,
feared for their lives in Iraq, believe in it...I think, how dare you!
These men and women live in that hell hole of a desert, walking
around with assault weapons, missing their families, not seeing their
babies being born, sleeping on the ground, sometimes not having
enough food, fearing for their lives, seeing their friends injured or
killed, and not being appreciated nearly enough. They are educated
on this war more than any civilian ever will be or should be. If
they believe in it and believe in their Commander in Chief then I
don't think anyone who is sitting over here getting educated by the
media has any room to talk. We don't know the real reasons the
Iraq war started nor should we. It may very well have been to
keep our country safe. We just don't know. And to the people who
feel that we should be told...if it's reported to us then it's
reported to terrorists.
Our military. For the record, they are under appreciated and
severely under paid. This is the United States of America for
God's sake. OUR military should have the very best of everything.
The best weapons, the best helmets, the best tanks, the best health
care, and so on. Why, in our society, do people who act in movies
and sing songs make more money than our military? Why do they
make more money than police men and women and firefighters?
Why do they make more money than teachers (the good ones
anyway)? It's a complete disgrace. Many of these
people...heroes...can barely make it on their salaries. Many people
in the military are actually poor...dirt poor. Unbelievable.
Just my two cents!
